UNDERSTANDING SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

A Guide to Revolutionary Healing

WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?

Shockwave therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT)

Shockwave therapy is a cutting-edge medical technique that utilizes acoustic waves to stimulate healing and regeneration within the body. These acoustic waves are high-energy pulses that travel through the skin and reach the target tissues, triggering a cascade of biological responses.

HOW DOES SHOCKWAVE THERAPY WORKS?

The treatment involves the use of a specialized device that generates acoustic waves.

When these waves are applied to the affected area, they create microtrauma at the cellular level, promoting increased blood flow, neovascularization (formation of new blood vessels), and the release of growth factors. This process stimulates the body's natural healing mechanisms, enhancing tissue repair and regeneration.

THERAPY SESSIONS

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THERAPY SESSIONS?

CONSULTATION AND ASSESSMENT

Before your shockwave therapy session, you'll undergo a thorough consultation with a healthcare professional. This initial assessment helps the provider understand your medical history, the specific condition being treated, and ensures that shockwave therapy is a suitable option for you. The session may include discussions about your symptoms, previous treatments, and expectations.

PREPARATION FOR THE SESSION

Once the consultation is complete and shockwave therapy is deemed appropriate for your condition, you'll be prepared for the session. This typically involves positioning yourself comfortably, depending on the area being treated. For example, if targeting the shoulder, you may be seated or lying down with the affected shoulder accessible.

APPLICATION OF SHOCKWAVES

During the shockwave therapy session, a specialized device is used to deliver controlled pulses of acoustic waves to the targeted area. The practitioner applies a gel to the skin to enhance the transmission of shockwaves. You may experience a tapping or knocking sensation as the waves penetrate the tissues. The intensity of the treatment can be adjusted based on your comfort level.

DURATION AND FREQUENCY

The duration of a shockwave therapy session can vary depending on the condition being treated and the specific protocol established by the healthcare provider. Sessions typically last between 15 to 30 minutes. The frequency of sessions varies as well, with providers often recommending multiple sessions over a few weeks to achieve optimal results. Your healthcare professional will provide guidance on the recommended treatment plan based on your individual needs.

POST-TREATMENT CARE

After a shockwave therapy session, you can usually resume your regular activities. However, your healthcare provider may advise avoiding strenuous activities or specific movements, depending on the treated area. Hydration and following any additional post-treatment recommendations are crucial to support the body's healing processes.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS AND SAFETY

Shockwave therapy is generally safe, but like any medical procedure, it may have potential side effects. These are typically mild and may include temporary discomfort, redness, or swelling at the treatment site. Serious side effects are rare, and your healthcare provider will discuss any potential risks during the initial consultation.
